Trees fail quietly for months before they fail loudly. The crack that finally lets go during a windstorm usually started as a hairline fracture back in spring, and the root that finally releases its grip on the soil was often rotting underground since last winter’s rains. When a tree appears dangerous to the untrained eye, the damage is often so extensive that removal is not only the best option; it’s the only safe option.

Common Hazard Signs 

Most hazard trees give off more than one warning sign at once. One yellowing branch alone rarely means much but add to that fungal growth at the base and a slight lean, and you have a tree failing on multiple fronts at once.

Leaning Tree Risks 

Not all leans are a problem. Trees that grow toward available light often develop a permanent, stable lean early in life and never move. The question is whether the lean is new. 

A trunk that has shifted angle within the past year, especially following heavy rain or a prior windstorm, usually means the root plate has partially separated from the soil. Arborists call this phenomenon “root plate heaving,” and it often shows up as a crescent-shaped crack or mound of raised soil on the opposite side of the lean, a detail most homeowners walk past without noticing. That separation tends to grow with each subsequent storm, rather than self-stabilize, if left alone.  

Cracked Trunk Issues 

A tree with a visible trunk crack is already halfway to falling; the only question is which storm finishes the job. 

Bark splits from rapid growth heal over and pose little risk. Cracks that run into the heartwood are different: they widen with every gust as the trunk flexes, and research on windstorm damage consistently shows that trunk breakage, while less common than branch failure, causes some of the most severe property damage because the entire upper canopy comes down at once. Infected trees often develop thin, rounded crowns and a “distress crop” of cones before succumbing to windthrow, sometimes years after the initial infection. The disease is transmitted by direct contact between roots, so one infected tree can gradually influence the health of its neighbors.
